Internet Safety Tips for Parents

Teach your children to keep their identity private -do not use personal information (name, birthday, age, addrsss, phone or cell phone numbers, schedules, school, sports, or church) in posts, personal websites, social networking sites, or chatrooms. -do not use backgrounds that identify a location -(see number 3) -check the sites they are using 7. Discuss the importance of telling an adult if something makes your children scared, uncomfortable, or confused while online. 8. Social networking is usually an online community of people who share interests and activities. These websites provide user webpages, chat rooms, and blogging space. Some examples of social networking sites include: Myspace, Club Penguin, Facebook and NeoPets. Parents should: -Have access to their children’s social network -Make their own profile and explore the site -Learn the sites safety features -Teach your children to use the privacy settings -Look at your children's friends list, check out friends' pages, and ----- -make sure your child personally knows anyone they select as a “friend”. Safe Blogging/Message Board Tips1. Only post things that you would want everyone (in school, at home, in other countries) to know. 2. Do not share personal information. 3. Think before you post. 4. Know who you’re communicating with. 5. Consider your audience. 6. Know how to give constructive feedback. 7. Treat other people the way you want to be treated. 8. Use appropriate language and proper grammar and spelling. 9. Only post information that you can verify is true (no gossiping). 10.
